How to take care of your skin when you wear makeup all the time

Whether your makeup routine is a force of habit or something you adore doing, if you are wearing makeup everyday there are some skincare essentials you need to know to ensure your skin remains in its best condition.

Many of us love the look of makeup, sometimes it makes us feel more confident and sometimes it's just plain fun however it can be damaging to your skin, especially if you are wearing it regularly. Potential side effects include irritation, dryness, oiliness and clogged pores. To offset these impacts, it’s important to understand how to prepare, protect and restore your skin each day to keep it glowing and healthy.

Here are just a few things to keep in mind if you (like many of us) are wearing makeup regularly.

Preparation is key

Set your skin up for success with these four simple steps before starting your daily makeup routine.

1. Cleanse: Cleansing is the perfect way to wake up in the morning! Splash your face with some cool water and massage in a gentle cleanser to ensure your skin is clear of any dirt, bacteria and excess oils to set your canvas.
2. Moisturise: Whether its winter or summer, moisturising morning and night is essential. Some makeup can dry out your skin, so ensure you hydrate your freshly cleansed face with a nourishing moisturiser and establish a silky, even surface for your makeup.

3. Sunscreen: Applying sunscreen before you start applying your makeup is so important! It’s good practice to apply sunscreen even if your makeup has SPF in it. We recommend always applying 50+ SPF after you moisturise. Everyone knows SPF protects you from the dangers of the sun, including skin cancer, however it will also keep you looking youthful. One of the most common causes of premature ageing of the face is ultraviolet exposure, so wearing sunscreen will help slow down the signs of ageing, like wrinkles and fine lines.
4. Prime: Add a thin layer of primer on top of your moisturiser to smooth out fine lines, protect your skin from water loss, bacteria and excessive oils found in some foundations.

Now that your skin is ready for the day and is prepped for makeup, it’s time to talk about how to properly take care of your skin at the end of the day.

Make your bed a makeup free zone

Any skincare guru will tell you removing your makeup before bed is a MUST! Sleeping in your makeup can lead to clogged pores, acne, skin irritation, eye infection and nasty bacterial breakouts. So, making sure you are doing a thorough double cleanse is essential before you pop on those pjs and slip into bed.

Unfortunately, sometimes simply washing off your makeup isn’t quite enough for optimal skin health. The best way to remove your makeup is with a cleanser and a makeup remover swipey.

Our microfiber makeup remover swipeys are gentle on the skin but are textured just enough to ensure they grab hold of your makeup and clear the surface of your skin. Our nourishing face cleanser is incredible for your skin plus it has makeup removing properties so will remove makeup and dirt, leaving your skin clean and clear.

Remember, your makeup will never be a 10 if your skincare game is a 2. Take care of your skin and your makeup will look better than ever!
