Why we don't use Aluminium in our skincare products

As mothers, we’re always striving to protect and nourish our children - and this starts in the womb. The long list of foods we’re told to avoid during pregnancy is common knowledge, but what about the products and ingredients that you should be avoiding to protect your baby?

The importance of a pregnancy-safe skincare routine

You may not even realise that when you’re applying your new fancy moisturiser, every single ingredient in that product is absorbed into your bloodstream which is then passed through the placenta and onto your baby. So, it makes sense that you’d only want to expose your baby to the safest ingredients possible.

At Bohemian Skin, we developed our entire skincare range with the goal of being 100% pregnancy safe, and because of this, we err on the side of precaution with the ingredients that we use throughout our range.

Why You Should Avoid Aluminimum During Pregnancy

Aluminium is another controversial skincare ingredient, especially when it comes to women’s health and here at Bohemian Skin, we choose to exclude all ingredients with links to negative health outcomes.

In 2012, the University of Reading published research finding the presence of aluminium in breast tissue samples taken from women who had undergone mastectomies*. This casual link is enough for us to exclude Aluminium from all of our formulations. Research cited as recent as 2021 suggests that further study needs to be conducted as “the dermal absorption of aluminium is not widely understood and that “future studies should target real-life based long-term exposure to antiperspirants and other aluminium-containing cosmetics and personal care products.”

When checking your ingredients labels for Aluminium, they can appear under the below names:

Alumina Hydrate, Alumina, Hydrated, Alumina, Trihydrate, Aluminium Hydroxide Sulphate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Aluminum Hydroxide Sulfate (Al(Oh)(So4)), Aluminum Oxide Trihydrate, Aluminum Oxide, Hydrate, Aluminum Trihydroxide, Aluminum Hydroxide, Ci 77002, Hydrate Aluminum Oxide, Hydrated Alumina, Pigment White 24, Trihydrate Alumina, Trihydroxy Aluminum, and Trihydroxyaluminum

Especially when you are planning to conceive, pregnant, and/or breastfeeding it is important to err on the side of caution and choose skincare products that are safe options for you and your unborn baby. We are proud to have formulated all of our products to be safe for use through all of these stages while still keeping our formulas effective in treating skin concerns like acne, hyperpigmentation, dryness, and ageing.
